An interesting history for a big brand
How was Wettex born? A focus on main innovations and the production system
In 1948 Curt Lindquist was working for Celloplast, a company set in Norrkoping, when one day discovered what would then become the Wettex sponge cloth. He was experimenting together with his wife and his two sons in order to find a new kind of sponge, different from the mold sponges that Celloplast was already producing. With only a thick cellulose sponge and a meat grinder he was able to create what he wanted: a gray, finely divided mass or better the idea behind Wettex sponge cloth. After that he mixed that mush with cotton and crystal of sodium sulphate (then rinsed out). Wettex name was given by his wife Margareta and derives from “Wet- textile”. Wettex sponge cloth was born and the process was soon protected by patent in 1949. Already in the 60s the new cloth was able to enjoy a great success and the brand Wettex has been registered in more than 50 countries where nowadays it is still available.
Machinery and production processes improved and new kind of cloths have been developed: in 1947 Soft and fresh, a thinner version, was launched. In 1990 Wettex AB was acquired by Freudenberg & co (Vileda). Then many innovation have taken place: installation of new production line for wet sponge cloths and modernization of base production process techniques and converting.
Wettex can boast to have a local production system in every country. The production is never made outside the place of distribution.
